Our Year in Review | Banana Republic

As we look towards the new year and the promise of hope it offers, we also wanted to stop for a moment and reflect upon 2020, acknowledging the lasting impact it has left upon us and the lessons we hope to take away from it. Our roots as a brand are connected to a belief that we’re all on a journey — one not always clear to us at the time — but a journey, nonetheless. We took some bold steps in 2020 to embark on something new and we look forward to where they will take us in 2021. As we travel this road together, we hope you’ll continue to join us.

Below you’ll find our road map of sorts, a look at where we started in 2020 and, more importantly, where we aim to be.

BR CAMPAIGNS

TRUE HUES

In January 2020, we reintroduced True Hues, our inclusive range of solution-wear designed to complement and celebrate shade and body diversity. The line included slips, camis, bodysuits and face masks in a variety of colors.

NO BOUNDARIES | Chinaka Hodge & Jon Boogz

We introduced “NO BOUNDARIES” in honor of Black History Month, a campaign dedicated to providing space for Black artists and writers to share their stories. We highlighted poet Chinaka Hodge and dancer Jon Boogz, two Black artists making a difference in their communities through their art forms.

BR COMMUNITY

International Women’s Day Donation + RBG Necklace

We continued to support the fight for women’s equality by saluting female trailblazers and boundary breakers. In honor of International Women’s Day, we donated $100,000 to CARE in support of P.A.C.E., our female education and empowerment program. Additionally, with the reissue of the Notorious Necklace, we made a total donation of $500,000 to the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW).

Amplify Voices

As the year progressed and many social injustices came to light, we understood that there had to be change. We used our platform as a space to amplify Black voices within Gap Inc. and the community in the hopes of initiating conversations that lead to necessary change.

BETTER REPUBLIC

World Water Day | 1.2 million gallons saved with Washwell™ Program

In March 2020, we made a promise to make better clothes for a better planet. We celebrated World Water Day with a commitment to reduce our water usage and saved a total of 1.2 gallons of water to date through dye techniques and washing methods like our Washwell™ Program.

BETTER REPUBLIC

We celebrated Earth Day by making a promise to incorporate more sustainable methods into our clothing. Our April campaign launched Better Republic, our sustainability platform which introduced new ways to produce the clothes me make, from using recycled fabrics, organic cottons and innovative coloring and washing techniques.

LOOKING AHEAD TO 2021

TRUE HUES

Building on the success of our second launch of True Hues, we are excited to expand the line with more product offering. Going into 2021, we look forward to bringing more diversity and range into the collection, highlighted by a new campaign featuring a cast of real-life individuals who embrace the values of self-love, self-empowerment, and self-respect.

Harlem’s Fashion Row

As we continue using our platform to amplify voices from various backgrounds, we are also looking at ways to be supportive and take action. We’re excited to welcome Charles Harbison, winner of 2020 Harlem’s Fashion Row, who will work with us to design a capsule collection for Banana Republic. This is our first time producing a collection with HFR, a social program providing a platform for underrepresented Black and Latino fashion designers, and we look forward to creating a collaborative experience.
