Editor’s Letter:
The Summer Issue

It’s the weekend! Let’s go on an adventure.

I recently relocated to San Francisco, after a decade living in New York City. Being on a new coast (and having a car!) reignited a wanderlust that had gotten lost in the hustle and bustle of life in the concrete jungle. Now I spend most weekends exploring beach towns along Highway 1—Carmel by the Sea, Monterey, Santa Cruz, Big Sur and Malibu are the most recent—and pinching myself that this is my new playground. It feels good to reconnect with my explorer spirit. Each week, my husband and I plan our next weekend trip and our two-year-old has started chanting: “It’s the weekend! Let’s go on an adventure.”

The funny thing about traveling is that the more places you go, the more you add to the list. My new favorite mantra has become Susan Sontag’s “I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list.” We just booked a summer vacation to Denmark and Sweden, and I can’t wait to get lost in their culture and see life through a different lens. When I told my friend about the trip, she commented how brave we are for taking our toddler on an international flight—but we wouldn’t have it any other way. He loves it just as much as we do. Plus, we promised we would show him the world.

Our seasonal campaign, The Summer of Long Weekends hits particularly close to home this year. Shot in Spain, it’s rooted in the brand’s DNA of travel and discovery (remember our safari-themed stores of our youth?!) and celebrates quintessential Banana Republic—elevated pieces for everyday adventures. These are the pieces you’ll want to wear on repeat all summer long (and beyond) when you are doing what you love—traveling near and far, relaxing on a beach and soaking in every moment.

At least, that’s my plan. What’s yours?
